Graffitimundo tour

We went on an afternoon tour run by a company called Graffitimundo. It was part walking and partly by small bus. Well organised and our guide was an Aussie from Sydney called Kirsty and she was great - very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

There is apparently a difference between Graffiti, Tagging and Street Art - which is obvious when you think about it, but up to now I hadn't. DM and I agree that our favourite Street Artist is 'I am Tester' - on the right below. This wall was done during a special event and is pretty spectacular. The taggers added the line below as a mark of respect and a desire to be close to their heroes...and here I was thinking that they were a bunch of morons defacing what was a pretty good effort.

Another artist from the UK did this homage to Napoleon (with spray can)

  1. Is street art and graffiti not illegal in Buenos Aires? Maybe it is encouraged? Whatever - its great!

  2. Sasha - it is illegal - but - if you own the building you can commission them to do an art piece for you. Also although it it is illegal they can paint in the daytime. I guess that is the reason why some of the pieces are so complicated - it takes them a week to do it and they don't have to do it in the dark - and also they are not afraid of being arrested at any point. They don't get arrested even if they paint on a wall that they don't have permission for. Strange, but true. It seems to be encouraged.

  3. Very cool - especially the Bulls. Interesting re: tagging - I wonder if the same 'code' exists here.
