Steve Jobs

Graffiti of a different kind - in a small lane in Palermo

Graffitimundo tour

We went on an afternoon tour run by a company called Graffitimundo. It was part walking and partly by small bus. Well organised and our guide was an Aussie from Sydney called Kirsty and she was great - very enthusiastic and knowledgeable.

There is apparently a difference between Graffiti, Tagging and Street Art - which is obvious when you think about it, but up to now I hadn't. DM and I agree that our favourite Street Artist is 'I am Tester' - on the right below. This wall was done during a special event and is pretty spectacular. The taggers added the line below as a mark of respect and a desire to be close to their heroes...and here I was thinking that they were a bunch of morons defacing what was a pretty good effort.

Another artist from the UK did this homage to Napoleon (with spray can)

Guerrilla Whatever

In the spirit of the local Guerrilla Crochet, here is a tree adorned with imported Nepalese (I presume) material. Not quite the same hand made aesthetic but it is well done and I quite like it. Seems to suit the tree well

Isaac Katz

We just bought this ring from a jeweller called Isaac Katz, who was recommended to me by Jo White (of The Fabulous Mrs Fox in Brunswick Heads). He is in Santa Rosa in Palermo.
What a lovely man. The ring is cast in sterling silver from a slice of a seed from a tree here. The closest I can get to a name is Sweet Gum Tree - not sure what it is really. Anyway, the ring is very naive and simple - the complete opposite to what I do really, and I like it!

He also does small bronze sculptures which are too heavy to take back to OZ, unfortunately.

AES+F:

That is the name of the Russian group who produce the most wonderful video installations. Those of us lucky enough to have MONA on their doorstep in Hobart, would have seen the smaller video that used to run there, when MONA opened.
This one is the third part in a trilogy and we were told it was called 'Heaven' - however the title in the film says 'The Feast of Maldichio" - not that it matters - not a lot of it makes sense - but MY GOD the images are AMAZING

The images are all shot live action, a single frame at a time and edited together. A huge amount of work!

Unfortunately we have missed 'Hell' and 'Purgatory' which no doubt would have been incredible - but we feel lucky to have seen this one.

The screen is actually 30 metres wide, divided into three and it ran for about three quarters of an hour to music by Beethoven (his 7th) and a couple of Russian composers who did modern bits in between.

The missing

In one of the main squares here, there is a permanent protest against the government concerning the thousands of people - a lot of them quite young - who went missing during several of the periods of unrest (of which there were many)

San Telmo street market

We have been there two Sundays running - yesterday it was raining so not much of a show in the street, so we went in to the side galleries - so much to look at

Hot Dog Dog

The Mustard Gang strikes again

Well - yesterday we were both sprayed with mustard on our backs.

A 'friendly' dumpy woman brought it to our attention and DM told her where to go in no uncertain terms. She had a backpack on and there was a guy with a backpack on nearby, on the phone to someone - who turned out to be a driver in a car parked close by.

Having shouted at the woman DM then pointed vigorously at the man with the phone and they all made a speedy retreat in the car. DM made it quite obvious that he was taking a photo of the numberplate - not that it will be of any help, but it made us feel better.

Again it was in a good part of town, but we were engrossed in maps, working out where to walk to next and there were not many people around, being Saturday afternoon in the city.

Annoying, because the stuff they spray is quite pongy and difficult to get off. I thought of retaliating and having a spray of my own - I thought tomato sauce and bleach would be good - but then had second thoughts, as you don't know how violent they could get. They probably would not be happy with having the tables turned on them.

So onwards and upwards and be prepared for the next attack...

Eva Peron's grave

You couldn't go to Recoleta Cemetary with out visiting Eva Peron's tomb

Plus a few more snaps that are worth looking at...such a great mixture of beauty and disrepair
